Shooting by Moonlight – 3

Beragoo Homestead. Shot on 14 July 2011 @ 7:28pm.

  • 30″
  • f/5
  • 18mm
  • ISO 1600
  • Canon EOS 500D
  • Lightroom 3.4
I was originally intending to make an HDR out of this photo and another 2 files but I thought that this single image worked by itself much better than what I could have made an HDR into. I guess that there wasn’t much dynamic range to have to capture in this scene anyway. Remember, that it’s basically just illuminated by the moon. I’m personally surprised that my camera managed to pull out so much light. I quite like the odd lighting effect that the moon provides and the fact that you can see the stars… well, that’s why I love the country.

Four Seasons

The Four Seasons Hotel, Geroge St, Sydney. Shot on 31 July 2011 @ 1:55pm.

  • 1/1000 +/- 2EV
  • f/4
  • 18mm
  • ISO 100
  • Canon EOS 500D
  • Photomatix Pro Mac, Photoshop CS5 Mac
The Four Seasons for me, stands out from the rest of the hotels in the area. I suspect that it might have to do with the different colour of the building? Anyway, I got this as I was crossing the road, not as nicely framed as I would have liked but that’s what cropping’s for right? And I managed to not get run over so another plus. This is much more spectacular when the sun sets and the clouds get a beautiful orange tinge but I never seem to have my DSLR on my when I’m in the city that late. Again, I’m trying to use HDRs to add that little extra contrast and saturation as well as allowing me to not washout the background.

Shooting by Moonlight – 2

Out the front of my house, Beragoo Homestead. Shot on 14 July 2011 @ 7:25pm

Once I had figured out the approximate exposures required I just left my camera at that and shot RAW. RAW is amazing and I encourage everyone to at least try it. I use RAW nearly all of the time now because of the flexibility is provides. Basically everything was tweaked from the original RAW file so I didn’t need to get the exposure 100% spot on.

Darlington Sunsets

Darlington Road, The University of Sydney Darlington Campus. Shot on 31 July 2011 @ 4:52pm

  • 1/250 +/-2EV
  • f/3.5
  • 18mm
  • ISO 100
  • Canon EOS 500D
  • Photomatix Pro Mac, Photoshop CS5 Mac
So I saw this shot when I was walking home the other day. Thankfully uni wasn’t on and I could stand in the middle of the road without getting run over. I’ve been trying to get into HDR’s. I don’t do those extreme, crazy, unrealistic HDRs but I simply use it as a tool to overcome the limited dynamic range of modern DSLRs. I just like the extra colours that the HDR effects provide. Yes, I didn’t realise I was at f/3.5, may bad. It’s not quite 100% as to how I imagined it would turn out, but we’ve all got to start somewhere right?

Shooting by Moonlight – 1

Basically I shot using the available moonlight. Nothing else. Gives quite an eerie effect I think. Random car driving down Beragoo Road annoyed me cause I didn’t notice it until I went to process the photo. Ahh well.
